Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs

What each ingredient does

Hare
Gives the soup its main meaty flavour and body as it stews.
Lean beef
Adds savoury depth and body to the stock as it cooks slowly.
Ham or bacon
Adds salty, smoky flavour that seasons the broth.
Onions
Add sweetness and aromatic depth to the broth.
Soy sauce or harvey's sauce
Adds salty, savoury depth to the finished soup.

The step that matters

Stew until the meat is tender. Hare and beef are lean and tough, so they need long, gentle simmering to break down connective tissue. Stopping early leaves the meat chewy and the broth thin in flavour.

Swap the onion

How well each one fits the dish's main ingredients (beef, ham, sauce, meat):

  1. Mustardfits about as well
