What each ingredient does

Chicken breasts
Provide the main protein, which becomes tender and cooked through during simmering.
Flour
Thickens the broth into a sauce as it cooks with the liquid.
Chicken broth
Forms the liquid base of the sauce and carries the flavors.
Walnuts
Add a toasted, nutty flavor and a bit of body to the sauce.
Onions
Soften and add sweetness and savory depth to the sauce base.
White wine vinegar
Adds a sharp acidity that brightens the rich, savory sauce.

The step that matters

Simmering the chicken in the sauce. Simmering covered for 15 minutes cooks the chicken through while the flour thickens the broth. Too little heat or time leaves the chicken undercooked or the sauce thin, while boiling hard can toughen the meat.
