What each ingredient does

Eggs
Bind the topping and help it set into a firm, cake-like crust.
Bisquick
Forms the flour-based batter that bakes into the pot pie topping.
Milk
Hydrates the flour and leavening to make a smooth, pourable batter.
Cheddar cheese
Melts into the filling and browns on top, adding richness and flavour.
Tomato soup
Supplies moisture, acidity and body to bind the filling together.
Mixed beans
Add protein-rich bulk and a firm, hearty texture to the filling.

The step that matters

Mix the topping until smooth. Lumps of dry Bisquick left in the batter can stay pasty after baking. Mixing until smooth hydrates the flour evenly so the topping bakes into a uniform, tender crust.
