Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs

What each ingredient does

Long grain rice
Forms the bulk of the salad and holds its texture once cooked and cooled.
Vegetable stock
Cooks the rice while adding savoury flavour to each grain.
Turmeric powder
Gives the rice a yellow colour and a warm, earthy aroma.
Pineapple chunks
Adds sweetness and acidity that brighten the salad.
Walnuts
Add crunch and a toasty, fatty richness.
Lemon juice
Adds acidity that balances the honey and sweetens the overall flavour.

The step that matters

Cooling the rice on a tray. Spreading the rice out cools it quickly and lets excess steam escape, so grains stay separate instead of turning soggy and clumping when the dressing is folded in.
