Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs

What each ingredient does

Garlic
Provides the main flavour, which mellows and sweetens as it simmers until tender.
Eggs
Set into soft threads in the hot broth, giving the soup its silky texture.
Bread
Soaks up liquid and thickens the soup, giving it body.
Chicken broth
Forms the savoury liquid base that carries the other flavours.

The step that matters

Adding the eggs. Eggs must go in slowly while the liquid is stirred. Stirring spreads the egg so it cooks into fine threads rather than clumps. Adding it too fast, or into liquid that is not hot enough, can leave lumps.

Swap the garlic

How well each one fits the dish's main ingredients (olive, chicken, bread, egg):

  1. Garlicthe original
  2. Capersfits about as well
  3. Thymefits less well
  4. Parsleyfits less well

Fit is the average pairing score against olive, chicken, bread, egg. Candidates are from the same food group and used in at least 100 recipes.
