Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs

What each ingredient does

Black beans
Provide body and protein-rich bulk, and the puree thickens the soup.
Carrots
Add sweetness and firm texture that softens during simmering.
Stewed tomatoes
Add acidity and liquid that gives the soup its base flavor.
Onion
Builds a sweet, savory aromatic base as it softens in oil.
Vegetable stock
Provides the main liquid and carries the flavor of the spices.

The step that matters

Simmering until carrots are tender. Carrots need enough time at a gentle simmer to soften fully; stopping early leaves them firm and the soup underdeveloped in flavor. Keeping the heat low after boiling prevents scorching on the pan bottom.
