Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs

What each ingredient does

Beef round eye
Forms the body of the sandwiches; long moist cooking softens its connective tissue.
Vinegar
Adds acidity that brightens the beef and helps tenderize it during cooking.
Tomatoes
Add juicy moisture and acidity to the vinaigrette.
Onions
Provide sharp aroma and bite that cut through the rich beef.
Green pepper
Adds crisp texture and fresh, grassy flavour.

The step that matters

Cook the beef for the full time under pressure. Tough connective tissue in beef round breaks down only with sustained moist heat. Stopping early leaves the meat chewy and harder to slice finely.

Swap the clove

How well each one fits the dish's main ingredients (beef, vinegar, garlic, tomato, onion, pepper):

  1. Cuminfits better
  2. Thymefits better
  3. Oreganofits better
  4. Clovethe original

Fit is the average pairing score against beef, vinegar, garlic, tomato, onion, pepper. Candidates are from the same food group and used in at least 100 recipes.
