Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs

What each ingredient does

Rice
Forms the bulk of the salad and absorbs the curry flavour and dressing as it cooks.
Curry powder
Provides the warm, aromatic spice flavour that runs through the rice.
Oil and vinegar dressing
Adds fat and acidity that moisten the rice and balance the spices.
Tomato
Contributes juiciness and fresh acidity to the salad.
Carrot
Adds subtle sweetness and a firm, crisp texture.

The step that matters

Fluff the rice and let it cool before adding the dressing. Hot rice with residual steam turns mushy and absorbs dressing unevenly; fluffing separates the grains and cooling lets them firm up so they stay distinct when tossed.

Swap the onion

How well each one fits the dish's main ingredients (rice, tomato, carrot, pepper, vinegar, sauce):

  1. Capsicumfits better
  2. Cucumberfits better
  3. Okrafits about as well
  4. Onionthe original

Fit is the average pairing score against rice, tomato, carrot, pepper, vinegar, sauce. Candidates are from the same food group and used in at least 100 recipes.
