Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs

What each ingredient does

Black beans
Add protein-rich body and a creamy texture that holds the filling together.
Zucchini squash
Adds moisture and tender bulk to the filling as it cooks down.
Cooked rice
Adds bulk and soaks up juices from the vegetables and tomatoes.
Diced tomatoes
Provide liquid and acidity that moisten and season the skillet mixture.
Onion
Builds a sweet, savory base as it softens in the hot oil.

The step that matters

Cook the onion until tender before adding the zucchini. Onion needs enough time over medium-high heat to soften and release its sweetness. Adding the zucchini too early can leave the onion raw and the vegetables unevenly cooked.
