Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs

What each ingredient does

Eggs
Set the custard so the strata firms up and holds its layers when baked.
Milk
Forms the liquid custard that soaks into the rice and cheese, keeping the dish moist.
Cooked rice
Forms the bulk of the layers and absorbs the custard as it bakes.
Cheddar cheese
Melts into the custard and adds richness and savory flavor throughout the layers.

The step that matters

Refrigerate the assembled dish several hours or overnight. Resting lets the rice and bread-free layers absorb the egg custard evenly, so the strata bakes uniformly and sets firm rather than leaving wet pockets.

Swap the parsley

How well each one fits the dish's main ingredients (rice, cheddar cheese, milk, egg, pepper, sauce, mustard):

  1. Capersfits better
