Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs

What each ingredient does

Long-grain white rice
Starch that absorbs the broth and sets the dish's fluffy, separate-grained texture.
Vegetable broth
Liquid that the rice absorbs as it cooks, supplying moisture and seasoning.
Black beans
Add protein-rich body and a hearty, earthy texture to the rice.
Egg substitute
Scrambled on top, it adds soft, mild richness and texture to the dish.
Onion
Softened at the start, it builds a sweet, savory aromatic base.

The step that matters

Covered simmer until all liquid is absorbed. Rice must cook covered on low heat so steam softens the grains evenly while the liquid is absorbed. Lifting the lid or rushing the heat can leave grains hard or scorched on the bottom.

Swap the onion

How well each one fits the dish's main ingredients (corn, cream, celery, pepper, rice, turmeric, oregano):

  3. Spinachfits better
