Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs

What each ingredient does

Semi-sweet chocolate morsels
Melted into the base for flavor, and chopped pieces add bitter-sweet chocolate bits throughout.
Sweetened condensed milk
Provides sweetness and a creamy body that keeps the ice cream smooth and scoopable.
Half and half
Adds dairy fat and moisture, giving a rich, soft texture after freezing.

The step that matters

Beating the partly frozen mixture. Beating breaks up ice crystals and adds air so the texture stays smooth. If the mixture is fully hard, it cannot be beaten well; if it is too liquid, the chocolate pieces sink and the texture turns icy.

Swap the vanilla

How well each one fits the dish's main ingredients (chocolate, condensed milk):

  1. Vanillathe original
  2. Coconutfits about as well
  3. Cherryfits less well
  4. Bananafits less well

Fit is the average pairing score against chocolate, condensed milk. Candidates are from the same food group and used in at least 100 recipes.
