Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs

What each ingredient does

Cream cheese
Creates a tangy, creamy filling that stays soft and rich after baking.
Eggs
Add structure and set the batter and filling as they bake.
All purpose flour
Provides the main structure of the cupcake crumb.
Granulated sugar
Sweetens the batter and filling and helps the cupcakes brown lightly.
Baker's unsweetened chocolate
Gives the cupcake batter its deep chocolate flavor and color.
Vegetable oil
Adds moisture so the cupcakes stay tender after cooling.

The step that matters

Bake until a toothpick comes out clean. Baking to the stated time and doneness sets the egg and flour structure. Underbaking leaves the centers wet and sunken, while overbaking dries the crumb.
