Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs

What each ingredient does

Bread
Forms the cup that holds the egg while the edges brown and crisp.
Egg
Sets into a tender, cooked center that fills the bread hole.
Butter
Adds fat for browning and rich flavor in the bread hole.

The step that matters

Cook slowly until the white of the egg is set. Medium-low heat and a lid let the egg white set through while the yolk stays soft. High heat would toughen the white and could scorch the bread before the egg is cooked.
