Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs
What each ingredient does
- Vegetable shortening
- Provides fat that makes the cookies tender and short in texture.
- Cream cheese
- Adds moisture and a tangy richness to the dough.
- Egg
- Binds the dough and adds structure as it sets in the oven.
- Flour
- Forms the main structure of the cookies as the dough sets.
- Baking powder
- Releases gas during baking so the cookies rise slightly and lighten.
The step that matters
Refrigerate the dough before slicing. Chilling firms the fat so the roll holds its shape when sliced thin. Warm dough spreads in the oven and bakes into flat, uneven cookies.
