Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs

What each ingredient does

Wild rice
Provides the chewy, nutty-textured base that holds the salad together.
Cucumbers
Add crisp moisture and fresh, cooling crunch to the salad.
Red bell pepper
Adds sweetness and crisp texture to balance the rice.
Green onions
Contribute a sharp, mild onion aroma and bite.

The step that matters

Simmer the rice until some grains burst. Wild rice has a tough outer hull and needs long, gentle simmering to become tender. Cooking it fully but without vigorous boiling keeps grains intact, and draining off excess water before tossing prevents a soggy salad.

Swap the onion

How well each one fits the dish's main ingredients (wild rice, cucumber, pepper):

  1. Lettucefits better
  2. Welsh onionfits better
  3. Spinachfits better
