Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs

What each ingredient does

Salmon
Provides the main body and protein structure of the casserole.
Egg
Binds the mixture and helps it set firm when baked.
Soda crackers
Absorb liquid and add body, giving the casserole a light, sturdy texture.
Cheddar cheese
Adds richness and fat, and helps the top brown as it bakes.
Creamed corn
Adds moisture and sweetness to the mixture.

The step that matters

Bake covered, then uncover for the last 5 minutes. Baking covered traps steam so the centre sets gently without drying out. Uncovering at the end lets the top brown and firm slightly. Uncovering too early can dry the surface, while leaving it covered throughout keeps the top pale and soft.

Swap the almond
