Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs

What each ingredient does

Chicken breast
Provides the main protein, which firms as it cooks through and becomes opaque.
Brown rice
Forms the base that soaks up the tomato sauce and gives the dish its bulk.
Tomato paste
Concentrates the tomato flavour and thickens the sauce, adding body and depth.
Parmesan cheese
Adds savoury, salty flavour and melts into the dish for richness.
Spinach
Adds green colour and soft texture; squeezing it dry keeps the sauce from thinning.

The step that matters

Simmering the tomato sauce uncovered. Simmering uncovered lets water evaporate, so the tomatoes and tomato paste thicken into a sauce that clings to the rice rather than pooling.

Swap the clove
