Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs

What each ingredient does

Lean ground beef
Forms the main body of the loaf and provides savory meaty flavor.
Cooked rice
Adds bulk and moisture, keeping the loaf tender rather than dense.
Eggs
Bind the mixture together so the loaf holds its shape when sliced.
American cheese
Melts into a creamy layer through the center, adding richness and cheeseburger flavor.
Barbecue sauce
Caramelizes on top during baking, adding sweetness, tang and browning.

The step that matters

Covering the cheese layer completely. If the cheese is left exposed, it can melt out and burn on the pan rather than staying inside the loaf. Sealing it under the meat keeps it creamy and evenly distributed.
