Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs

What each ingredient does

Uncooked rice
Absorbs liquid from the soup and milk as it bakes, cooking into the body of the casserole.
Condensed cream of mushroom soup
Provides the creamy sauce that moistens the rice and chicken as they cook.
Boneless, skinless chicken breasts
Supply the main protein, which cooks through in the covered baking dish.
French fried onions
Add a crisp, browned topping and toasted onion flavour after the foil comes off.
Dry onion soup mix
Adds concentrated onion flavour and salt to the sauce and rice.

The step that matters

Keeping the foil on during the first bake. Covering the dish traps steam so the rice absorbs liquid and the chicken cooks through gently. Removing the foil early can leave the rice hard and the top dry, so the final uncovered bake is what browns the onions.

Swap the celery

How well each one fits the dish's main ingredients (cream, mushroom, garlic, milk, onion, rice, chicken):

  1. Thymefits about as well
  2. Celerythe original
  3. Cuminfits about as well
  4. Turmericfits about as well

Fit is the average pairing score against cream, mushroom, garlic, milk, onion, rice, chicken. Candidates are from the same food group and used in at least 100 recipes.
