Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs

What each ingredient does

Chicken
Provides the main protein; browning it first adds savory flavor to the dish.
Rice
Absorbs the broth as it simmers, becoming the tender base of the dish.
Chicken broth
Cooks the rice and adds savory flavor as the liquid is absorbed.
Tomatoes
Add acidity and moisture that blend into the cooking liquid.
Butter
Adds fat for browning the chicken and rich flavor.
Green onions
Soften in the fat, adding mild aromatic sweetness to the base.

The step that matters

Browning the chicken on all sides. Browning creates flavorful Maillard reactions on the surface. Pale chicken yields a bland dish, and the pieces need turning so color develops evenly.

Swap the parsley

How well each one fits the dish's main ingredients (chicken, pepper, butter, onion, rice, tomato):

Fit is the average pairing score against chicken, pepper, butter, onion, rice, tomato. Candidates are from the same food group and used in at least 100 recipes.
