Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs

What each ingredient does

Chicken breast
Provides the main protein and savory browned flavor when seared first.
Uncooked rice
Absorbs the broth as it cooks, setting the dish's body and fluffy grain texture.
Chicken broth
Supplies the cooking liquid that the rice absorbs, adding savory flavor throughout.
Smoked sausage
Adds smoky, savory fat and flavor that seasons the rice as it simmers.
Green peppers
Softens during the initial sauté, adding vegetable sweetness and aroma to the base.
Celery
Softens with the peppers and onions, adding aromatic depth to the base.

The step that matters

Simmer covered without lifting the lid. Once the lid is on, the rice cooks by absorbing the broth in trapped steam. Lifting the lid lets steam escape, which can leave the grains unevenly cooked and the liquid unabsorbed.
