What each ingredient does

Chicken breast
Provides the main protein, which becomes tender as it simmers gently in the broth.
Chicken broth
Adds moisture and savory flavor while cooking the chicken and the rice.
Butter
Adds fat and richness to the vegetables and helps them brown lightly.
Carrots
Add sweetness and firm texture that holds up during cooking.
Onion
Builds savory depth as it softens in the butter.
Rice
Forms the base that soaks up the broth and absorbs the sauce.

The step that matters

Cook the chicken gently until tender. Simmering below a hard boil keeps the chicken moist; boiling vigorously toughens the muscle proteins and dries the meat.
