Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs

What each ingredient does

Ground turkey or beef
Provides the protein base and bulk of the filling.
Cheese sauce
Adds creaminess and richness that binds the filling together.
Hot salsa
Adds moisture and acidity, along with heat.
Flour tortillas
Wrap the filling and become pliable and lightly toasted when warmed on the grill.

The step that matters

Draining the fat from the meat. Fat left in the skillet will make the filling greasy and can soak through the tortillas. Draining it as the meat cooks keeps the filling moist but not oily.

Swap the onion

How well each one fits the dish's main ingredients (turkey, cheese, sauce, garlic, pepper, flour):

  1. Capsicumfits better
  2. Mustardfits better
  3. Spinachfits about as well
  4. Onionthe original

Fit is the average pairing score against turkey, cheese, sauce, garlic, pepper, flour. Candidates are from the same food group and used in at least 100 recipes.
