Why it works: Cinnamon and vanilla match in chemistry and in kitchens. They rank in the top 1% of all ingredient pairs, and cooks put them together in 5,287 recipes. Both carry 4-methoxybenzaldehyde, which smells sweet, anise. The science ↓

Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs
What each ingredient does
- All-purpose flour
- Provides the structure that holds the cake together as it bakes.
- Eggs
- Bind the batter and set during baking to give the cake its structure.
- Vegetable oil
- Keeps the crumb moist and tender by adding fat instead of solid butter.
- Baking soda
- Reacts with acidity in the batter to produce gas that lifts the cake.
- Shredded carrot
- Adds moisture and body, keeping the cake soft over several days.
- Granulated sugar
- Sweetens the cake and helps it brown and stay tender.
The step that matters
Bake until a wooden pick comes out clean. Baking soda and eggs set the batter during baking. Pulling the cake early leaves a wet, sunken centre, while overbaking dries the crumb and makes it crumbly.
Swap the carrot
How well each one fits the dish's main ingredients (flour, sugar, cinnamon, egg, vanilla, peanut, butter):
- Sweet potatofits better
- Arrowrootfits better
- Capsicumfits better
- Carrotthe original
Fit is the average pairing score against flour, sugar, cinnamon, egg, vanilla, peanut, butter. Candidates are from the same food group and used in at least 100 recipes.
