Why it works: Ketchup and sauce match in chemistry and in kitchens. They rank in the top 1% of all ingredient pairs, and cooks put them together in 1,099 recipes. Both carry ethanol, which smells alcoholic, ethereal. The science ↓

Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs
What each ingredient does
- Baked beans
- Form the bulk of the dish and absorb the sauce as they bake.
- Ketchup
- Provides sweetness, acidity and body to the sauce.
- Brown sugar
- Adds sweetness and helps the sauce caramelize slightly as it cooks.
- Vidalia onion
- Adds savory depth and sweetness when cooked until dark brown.
- Turkey bacon
- Adds smoky, savory flavor and fat to the dish.
- Sharp cheddar cheese
- Melts into the sauce, adding richness and a tangy, savory note.
The step that matters
Simmering the sauce until the cheese melts completely. Cheese can separate, turn grainy or stick to the pan if heated too hard or too fast. Simmering gently on low lets the fat and proteins melt into a smooth, evenly combined sauce before it meets the beans.
Swap the apple
How well each one fits the dish's main ingredients (beans, onion, turkey, garlic, ketchup, sauce, mustard):
- Avocadofits better
- Limefits better
- Lemonfits better
