Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs

What each ingredient does

Cornstarch
Thickens the sauce as it heats, so it coats the chicken and vegetables.
Catsup
Adds sweetness and tang to the sauce and gives it body.
Pineapple chunks in juice
Adds sweetness and acidity, and the reserved juice helps make up the sauce liquid.
Cooked chicken
Provides the main protein; it is already cooked, so it only needs to heat through in the sauce.
Soy sauce
Adds salty, savory depth to the sauce.

The step that matters

Dissolve cornstarch in soy sauce before stirring it in. Cornstarch clumps if it hits hot liquid dry. Dissolving it first in a cold liquid lets the starch spread evenly, so the sauce thickens smoothly instead of becoming lumpy.
