Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs

What each ingredient does

Chicken broiler-fryer
Provides the main protein and, as it simmers, flavors the sauce.
Vegetable oil
Conducts heat for browning the chicken pieces, building color and flavor on the surface.
Cornstarch
Thickens the cooking liquid into a glossy sauce when heated.
Carrots
Add mild sweetness and texture as they soften during the covered simmer.
Chicken broth
Forms the cooking liquid that becomes the sauce and gently cooks the chicken.
Cooked rice
Soaks up the sauce and provides a neutral starchy base for serving.

The step that matters

Drain off all fat after browning. Leftover fat would make the sauce greasy and keep the cornstarch from thickening it evenly. Removing it before adding liquid gives a cleaner, smoother sauce.

Swap the basil
