What each ingredient does

Chicken pieces
Provides the main protein and savory meat flavor that the dish is built around.
Butter or margarine
Fat for browning the chicken, adding richness and golden color to the surface.
Bulk pork sausage
Adds fat and savory, seasoned meat flavor that seasons the rice and vegetables as they cook.
Cooked rice
Forms the bulk base of the casserole, absorbing flavors and giving it body.
Whole kernel corn with peppers
Adds sweetness, moisture and color to the rice mixture.
Lemon juice
Adds acidity that brightens the flavors of the rich meat and corn.

The step that matters

Browning the chicken. Searing the chicken in hot butter before baking builds browned, flavorful surfaces through the Maillard reaction. Skipping or crowding the browning leaves the chicken pale and less flavorful, since the moist oven heat will not brown it.

Swap the celery

How well each one fits the dish's main ingredients (chicken, pepper, butter, pork, onion, rice, corn):

  1. Garlicfits better
  2. Thymefits about as well
  3. Celerythe original
  4. Turmericfits about as well

Fit is the average pairing score against chicken, pepper, butter, pork, onion, rice, corn. Candidates are from the same food group and used in at least 100 recipes.
