Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs

What each ingredient does

Firm tofu
Provides the main body and protein, holding its shape while it cooks through.
Cheddar cheese
Melts into the rice and vegetables, adding richness and a binding, creamy texture.
Cooked rice
Forms the bulk of the dish and soaks up the melted cheese and margarine.
Diet margarine
Supplies fat for cooking the vegetables and helps them brown lightly in the skillet.
Garlic
Adds aroma and savory depth as it softens in the hot fat.

The step that matters

Melting the final cheese. Cheese melts smoothly over moderate heat, but too much heat or time can make it oily and tough. Covering the pan traps steam so the top layer softens evenly without scorching.
