Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs

What each ingredient does

Self-rising flour
Provides the bulk of the structure, and its built-in leavening helps the pudding rise.
Egg
Binds the batter and adds structure as it sets in the oven.
Margarine
Adds fat that makes the batter tender and rich after creaming with sugar.
Cocoa
Gives the pudding its chocolate flavour and dark colour.
Sugar
Sweetens the pudding and, in the topping, dissolves into a sauce.
Skim milk
Moistens the batter so the flour hydrates and the texture stays soft.

The step that matters

Pour the hot water gently over the topping. The hot water dissolves the cocoa and sugar sprinkled on top, forming a chocolate sauce that settles beneath the cake as it bakes. Pouring carefully keeps the topping layer from mixing into the batter and disturbing the separation.

Swap the cocoa

How well each one fits the dish's main ingredients (flour, sugar, egg, vanilla, milk):

  1. Almondfits better
  2. Chestnutfits better
  3. Hazelnutfits better
  4. Cocoathe original

Fit is the average pairing score against flour, sugar, egg, vanilla, milk. Candidates are from the same food group and used in at least 100 recipes.
