Why it works: Garlic and onion match in chemistry and in kitchens. They rank in the top 1% of all ingredient pairs, and cooks put them together in 29,058 recipes. Both carry furaneol, which smells caramel, strawberry. The science ↓
Honey-baked Chicken
Ingredients
Directions
Prepare
Discard giblets and neck of chicken (or save for stock). Rinse chicken under cold running water and pat dry. Set aside.
Coat a large nonstick skillet with pam and place over medium‑high heat until hot.
Add yellow squash, zucchini, onion, celery, and garlic to the skillet and sauté until tender‑crisp. Drain.
Stuff and bake
Combine the vegetable mixture, breadcrumbs, egg, pecans, salt, and pepper in a medium bowl; stir well.
Place the chicken, breast side up, on a rack in a roasting pan that has been coated with pam. Stuff lightly with the dressing mixture.
Truss the chicken (or put a ball of foil in the opening).
Combine apple juice and honey, stirring well. Brush the chicken with half of the apple‑juice‑honey mixture.
Bake at 350°F for 1½–2 hours or until the drumsticks are easy to move and juices run clear, basting occasionally with the remaining apple‑honey mixture.

Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs
What each ingredient does
- Broiler/fryer chicken
- Provides the main protein that cooks through slowly in the oven with the stuffing.
- Egg
- Binds the vegetable and breadcrumb stuffing so it holds together when lightly packed.
- Toasted wholewheat breadcrumbs
- Absorb moisture from the vegetables and give the stuffing body and structure.
- Honey
- Adds sweetness and helps the chicken brown and glaze as it bakes.
- Shredded zucchini and yellow squash
- Add moisture and softness to the stuffing.
The step that matters
Bake at 350°F for 1½–2 hours until the drumsticks move easily and juices run clear. Stuffed poultry must reach a safe internal temperature, and the stuffing in the cavity cooks more slowly than the meat. Checking for easy drumstick movement and clear juices helps confirm the bird is fully cooked. Basting keeps the surface moist and glazed.
Swap the pecans
How well each one fits the dish's main ingredients (chicken, celery, clove, garlic, pepper, honey, onion):
- Chickpeafits better
- Sesamefits better
- Cashew nutfits better
- Pecansthe original
Fit is the average pairing score against chicken, celery, clove, garlic, pepper, honey, onion. Candidates are from the same food group and used in at least 100 recipes.
