Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs

What each ingredient does

Hominy grits
Form the thick, starchy base that sets into a sliceable body as it cooks and bakes.
Eggs
Bind the mixture and set it into a firm, custard-like texture in the oven.
American cheese
Adds richness and creamy melt, and helps the dish hold together when baked.
Butter
Adds fat for richer flavor and a softer, more tender texture.

The step that matters

Cook the grits until very thick. Grits must thicken well before the eggs and cheese go in. If they are too thin, the baked dish will be loose and may not set firmly. Stirring constantly prevents scorching at the bottom of the pot.
