What each ingredient does

Chicken

Sausage
Adds smoky, savory flavor and fat that seasons the vegetables and rice.
Rice
Absorbs the stock as it cooks, turning the liquid into the body of the dish.
Onions
Softens and sweetens as it cooks, building the flavor base of the dish.
Chicken stock
Supplies the cooking liquid that the rice absorbs, carrying seasoning through the dish.
Green peppers
Contributes a fresh, slightly bitter vegetal note that softens during cooking.
