Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs

What each ingredient does

Onion
Softens and adds sweetness and aroma to the base of the sauce.
Garlic
Adds aroma that deepens as it cooks gently in the butter.
Butter or margarine
Adds fat and richness while carrying the flavor of the onion and garlic.
Tomatoes
Provide the main body, acidity and tomato flavor of the sauce.
Frozen italian vegetables
Add texture and color, becoming tender in the simmering sauce.
Parmesan cheese
Adds salty, savory flavor when sprinkled over the finished dish.

The step that matters

Reduce heat to medium and simmer the sauce 25 to 30 minutes. A gentle, long simmer lets the tomato sauce thicken and its flavors meld. Stirring occasionally prevents scorching on the bottom of the pan.
