What each ingredient does

Lean ground beef
Provides the meat base that forms and browns into the meatballs.
Soft breadcrumbs
Absorb moisture and keep the meatballs tender rather than dense.
Cream cheese
Adds richness and creaminess to the sauce as it blends smooth.
Parmesan cheese
Adds savoury, salty flavour and body to the sauce.
Cornstarch
Thickens the sauce when heated with liquid.
Beef broth
Supplies the liquid base of the sauce and savoury flavour.

The step that matters

Thickening the sauce with cornstarch. Cornstarch must be fully mixed into liquid before adding and then cooked while stirring constantly. Heat gelatinizes the starch and thickens the sauce; stopping early or leaving it unstirred can leave it thin or lumpy.
