What each ingredient does

Rice
Absorbs the broth and tomatoes as it cooks, becoming tender and giving the jambalaya its body.
Chicken broth
Cooks the rice and carries the seasonings, keeping the mixture moist as it simmers.
Peeled whole tomatoes
Add acidity and liquid, contributing flavour and moisture to the rice.
Crawfish tails
Provide the main protein, heated through at the end so they stay tender.
Green bell pepper
Softens in the butter to add sweetness and aromatic flavour to the base.

The step that matters

Simmer covered without lifting the lid. Rice cooks by absorbing liquid in a sealed pot. Stirring too often or lifting the lid lets steam escape, which can leave the rice unevenly cooked or gummy.

Swap the clove

How well each one fits the dish's main ingredients (butter, pepper, celery, onion, rice, tomato, garlic):

  1. Parsleyfits better
  2. Thymefits better
  3. Cuminfits better
  4. Clovethe original

Fit is the average pairing score against butter, pepper, celery, onion, rice, tomato, garlic. Candidates are from the same food group and used in at least 100 recipes.
