Ingredients

Directions

Prepare the batter

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F.

  2. Grease 9-inch round tart pan with removable bottom and set aside.

  3. In a small, heavy saucepan, melt chocolate and butter over low heat, stirring often. Remove from heat.

  4. In a medium bowl, using an electric mixer, beat eggs and vanilla on medium speed for 30 seconds.

  5. Gradually add sugar and beat for 1 minute.

  6. Beat in chocolate mixture, stopping occasionally to scrape down sides of bowl with a rubber spatula.

  7. Reduce mixer speed to low. Beat in flour and salt until just blended.

Marble and bake

  1. Spread batter evenly in prepared pan.

  2. Place cheese in a small bowl and stir well with a fork. Drop by teaspoonfuls randomly over surface of batter in pan.

  3. Using a sharp knife, swirl cheese mixture into chocolate mixture to create marbled effect.

  4. Bake until just set in center, 20 to 25 minutes.

Cool and serve

  1. Transfer pan to wire rack to cool completely.

  2. Remove side of pan, cut into wedges and serve.

Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs

What each ingredient does

Eggs
Bind the batter and set into a structure as they bake.
Bittersweet chocolate
Provides the rich chocolate body and deep flavor of the torte.
Butter
Adds fat for a tender, moist crumb and smooth richness.
All-purpose flour
Gives the batter structure so the torte holds its shape when baked.
Mascarpone cheese
Adds creamy tang and richness to the swirled marbled layer.
Sugar
Sweetens the batter and helps it bake with a tender texture.

The step that matters

Bake until just set in center. Overbaking dries out the torte and makes the crumb firm, while the center should stay slightly soft to keep the mascarpone swirl creamy and moist.
