Why it works: Carrot and parsley match in chemistry and in kitchens. They rank in the top 1% of all ingredient pairs, and cooks put them together in 8,053 recipes. Both carry 2,4-decadienal, which smells seaweed. The science ↓
Turkey Cake for Dogs
Ingredients
Directions
Prepare
Reduce the recipe by using 1 pound of meat and cutting all other ingredients by a fourth if desired.
Preheat oven to 350°F.
Lightly grease two 9‑inch round or square baking dishes, or a 9‑by‑13‑inch baking dish.
If using a dog‑shaped cake mold, place it on a greased baking sheet.
Make the loaf
In a large bowl, mix the turkey, cooked rice, carrots, celery and parsley; set aside.
In a small bowl, mix the beaten eggs, garlic and oil.
Add the egg mixture to the turkey mixture and mix well.
Add the mixture to the baking dishes and bake 1½ hours or until the meat is fully cooked.
Cool the loaf.
Ice and decorate
Reserve about ½ cup of mashed potatoes; ice the cooled loaf with the remaining mashed potatoes.
Thin the reserved potatoes with milk; add beet juice to the desired color.
Pour the mixture into a pastry bag fitted with a round or star tip.
Use the pastry bag to make decorations and write the dog's name on top.
Make rosettes and add carrot rounds or shredded carrots, or any other vegetable your dog likes.
Don’t forget the candles.

Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs
What each ingredient does
- Ground turkey
- Forms the main body of the loaf and provides protein structure as it cooks.
- Eggs
- Bind the meat and rice mixture so the loaf holds its shape when sliced.
- Cooked brown rice
- Adds bulk and a tender texture that keeps the loaf from drying out.
- Mashed potatoes
- Form a smooth, pipeable topping that holds decorations well.
- Olive oil
- Adds fat for moisture and a softer, less dry loaf.
- Beet juice
- Colors the potato topping pink without changing its texture much.
The step that matters
Baking until fully cooked. Ground turkey can look done on the outside while the center stays unsafe. Baking long enough for the meat to be fully cooked, and cooling before icing, lets the loaf set so the topping stays neat.
Swap the garlic
How well each one fits the dish's main ingredients (turkey, rice, carrot, celery, parsley, egg, olive):
- Thymefits better
- Marjoramfits better
- Tarragonfits better
- Garlicthe original
Fit is the average pairing score against turkey, rice, carrot, celery, parsley, egg, olive. Candidates are from the same food group and used in at least 100 recipes.
