Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs

What each ingredient does

Couscous
Absorbs the water and forms the light, fluffy body of the salad.
Black beans
Add protein-rich bulk and a firm, earthy texture that holds up when tossed.
Tomatoes
Contribute moisture and acidity that brighten the salad.
Green olives
Add salty, briny flavor and a firm bite.
Olive oil
Adds fat that coats the grains and carries flavor.
Lemon juice
Adds acidity that balances the richness of the oil and brightens the herbs.

The step that matters

Fluffing and cooling the couscous before mixing. Couscous keeps absorbing liquid as it sits, so if it is tossed while still warm or clumped, the grains turn gummy. Fluffing with a fork separates the grains, and cooling them fully lets the vegetables and dressing mix in without making the salad soggy.

Swap the onion

How well each one fits the dish's main ingredients (beans, celery, pepper, tomato, olive, parsley, dill):

  1. Carrotfits better
  2. Capsicumfits better
  3. Lettucefits better
