What each ingredient does

Shrimp
Cooks quickly and turns pink and opaque, giving the dish its main protein and body.
Breadcrumbs
Toast in the oven to form a crisp, golden topping that contrasts with the tender shrimp.
Olive oil
Moistens the crumbs and carries flavor, helping them brown evenly in the oven.
Garlic
Adds pungent aroma that mellows and sweetens as it bakes under the crumbs.
Parsley
Adds fresh, green herbal flavor and color that brightens the toasted crumbs.

The step that matters

Spread the crumbs and oil evenly over the shrimp. Crumbs that are too dry will not brown and crumbs that are too wet will steam and turn soggy. Moistening them with oil lets them toast to a crisp golden crust while the shrimp cook, so the oven time should be watched closely to avoid overcooking the shrimp.
