Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs

What each ingredient does

Carrots
Form the main body of the salad and provide its sweetness and texture.
Garlic
Adds a sharp, pungent aroma that carries through the dressed salad.
Lemon juice
Adds acidity that brightens the flavour and balances the oil.
Oil
Adds fat and moisture that coats the carrots and carries flavour.
Cumin
Contributes warm, earthy aroma characteristic of the dish.

The step that matters

Cooking the carrots in salt water. Carrots cooked until fully tender absorb the seasoned liquid and dressing evenly. Undercooked carrots stay firm and resist flavour, while overcooking makes them mushy and watery.
