What each ingredient does

Beef cubes
Provide the main protein, which becomes tender as the stew simmers.
Peanut butter
Adds richness, body and a nutty flavour to the stew.
Onions
Add sweetness and savoury depth as they soften in the stew.
Tomato paste
Adds concentrated acidity, colour and savoury depth to the sauce.
Chilli powder
Adds heat and warm, earthy flavour to the stew.

The step that matters

Adding the peanut butter mixture. Peanut butter can separate or clump if added too quickly to a hot liquid. Adding it slowly while stirring, over lower heat, helps it blend smoothly into the stew.
