Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs

What each ingredient does

Cake mix
Provides the sponge structure that soaks up the milk mixture.
Evaporated milk
Adds moisture and richness to the soaked cake.
Sweetened condensed milk
Adds sweetness and body to the milk soak.
Egg whites
Whip into a foam that gives the meringue topping its airy structure.
Light karo syrup
Keeps the meringue smooth and glossy by resisting sugar crystallization.

The step that matters

Pouring the warm syrup into the egg whites. Pour the syrup slowly while beating. Adding it too fast can deflate the foam, and syrup that is too hot can cook the whites unevenly, so the meringue may not reach a thick, stable consistency.
