Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs

What each ingredient does

Potatoes
Provide bulk and body, softening as they simmer into the chowder.
Flour
Thickens the milk-based broth into a creamy, smooth chowder.
Milk
Forms the creamy base that the flour thickens.
American cheese
Melts into the chowder, adding richness and a smooth, creamy texture.
Butter
Adds fat and flavor while softening the onion.

The step that matters

Adding the flour mixture to the hot vegetables. Flour clumps if it hits hot liquid unblended. Mixing it first with a little milk and stirring constantly while adding it keeps the thickener smooth.

Swap the celery

How well each one fits the dish's main ingredients (onion, butter, potato, pepper, milk, flour, cheese):
