What each ingredient does

Rice
Absorbs the cooking liquid and softens as it cooks, forming the body of the dish.
Smoked sausage
Releases smoky flavor and fat into the pot, seasoning the rice as it cooks.
Shrimp
Adds savory seafood flavor and a tender, quick-cooking protein.
Tomato
Provides moisture, acidity, and color that give the rice its reddish tone.
Chicken bouillon cubes
Add concentrated savory flavor and salt to the cooking liquid.
Corn or vegetable oil
Carries flavor from the sausage and pepperoni and helps the vegetables soften evenly.

The step that matters

Simmer low with the lid on after adding the rice. Rice needs a steady, gentle simmer with the lid on so it absorbs the liquid evenly and cooks through. Too much heat can scorch the bottom before the grains are tender.

Swap the tomato

How well each one fits the dish's main ingredients (beef, pepper, corn, shrimp, chicken, rice, sauce):

  1. Capsicumfits better
  2. Tomatothe original
  3. Potatofits about as well
  4. Asparagusfits less well

Fit is the average pairing score against beef, pepper, corn, shrimp, chicken, rice, sauce. Candidates are from the same food group and used in at least 100 recipes.
