What each ingredient does

Ground beef
Forms the main body of the loaf and provides meaty flavor and structure when cooked.
Egg
Binds the meat mixture so the loaf holds its shape when sliced.
Dry bread crumbs
Absorb liquid from the meat and milk, keeping the loaf moist and tender.
Milk
Adds moisture, keeping the meat tender rather than dry as it cooks.
Cheddar cheese
Melts into the rolled layers, adding richness and fat for flavor and moisture.
Onion
Adds savory aroma and moisture as it cooks into the meat.

The step that matters

Rolling the loaf. Rolling the meat into an even spiral keeps the cheese and mushrooms evenly distributed and the roll tight, so the loaf holds together and slices cleanly.
