Why it works: Celery and carrot match in chemistry and in kitchens. They rank in the top 1% of all ingredient pairs, and cooks put them together in 10,173 recipes. Both carry myristicin, which smells spice, warm. The science ↓
Chicken Roll
Ingredients
Directions
Make the sauce
Spray a cold large saucepan with non-stick spray coating.
Add celery, mushrooms, carrot, onion, and garlic.
Cook until onion is tender.
Cut up tomatoes.
Stir undrained tomatoes, tomato sauce, oregano, thyme, and sugar into vegetables.
Bring to a boil; reduce heat.
Simmer, uncovered, 20 minutes or until mixture is reduced to 2 cups.
Prepare the rolls
Skin, bone, and cut chicken breasts lengthwise in half.
Place each chicken piece between two pieces of plastic wrap and pound with a meat mallet to about 1/4 inch thickness.
In a bowl, stir together ricotta cheese, parmesan cheese, and parsley.
Spoon about 1 ½ tablespoons of the cheese mixture on each chicken piece.
Fold in the long sides of the chicken piece then roll up from the short end.
Bake and serve
Place the chicken rolls, seam side down, in a baking dish and pour sauce over chicken.
Cover and refrigerate for 2 hours.
Bake, covered, for 40 minutes or until chicken is no longer pink.
Sprinkle with mozzarella cheese; bake 4 minutes more.
Transfer to platter.

Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs
What each ingredient does
- Chicken breasts
- Forms the main protein that wraps around the cheese filling and cooks through.
- Ricotta cheese
- Adds creamy moisture to the filling so it stays soft during baking.
- Parmesan cheese
- Contributes salty, savoury flavour and helps the filling brown slightly.
- Mozzarella cheese
- Melts over the top during the final bake for a stretchy, golden finish.
- Tomatoes
- Provide acidity and body to the sauce that the rolls bake in.
- Mushrooms
- Add savoury depth and moisture to the sauce as they cook down.
The step that matters
Pound the chicken to even thickness. Uneven chicken cooks unevenly, leaving thick parts undercooked while thin parts dry out. Even thickness lets the roll cook through at the same rate and stay tender.
Swap the clove
How well each one fits the dish's main ingredients (celery, mushroom, carrot, onion, garlic, tomato, sauce):
- Thymefits better
- Cuminfits better
- Parsleyfits better
- Clovethe original
Fit is the average pairing score against celery, mushroom, carrot, onion, garlic, tomato, sauce. Candidates are from the same food group and used in at least 100 recipes.
