What each ingredient does

Black beans
Provide the bulk and filling body of the pie, with a soft, hearty texture.
Colby-jack or cheddar cheese
Melts between the layers to bind the filling and add richness and savoury flavour.
Flour tortillas
Form thin, soft layers between the bean filling that hold the pie together.
Salsa
Adds moisture and acidity to the bean mixture, keeping the filling from drying out.
