Why it works: Garlic and onion match in chemistry and in kitchens. They rank in the top 1% of all ingredient pairs, and cooks put them together in 29,058 recipes. Both carry furaneol, which smells caramel, strawberry. The science ↓

Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs
What each ingredient does
- Stew beef
- Provides meat flavor and becomes tender through long, moist simmering.
- Rice
- Absorbs cooking liquid and thickens the stew as it cooks.
- White potatoes
- Break down slightly in the liquid, adding body and starch to the stew.
- Pumpkin or butternut squash
- Softens into the liquid and adds natural sweetness and body.
- Onion
- Sautéed at the start, it builds a savory aromatic base for the dish.
- Tomatoes
- Add acidity and moisture that help form the stew's flavor base.
The step that matters
Simmering with the lid on and adding liquid as needed. Rice and starchy vegetables absorb liquid as they cook, so the pot can scorch or turn dry. Gentle simmering keeps the beef tender and the rice cooking evenly.
